Principle into Practice—A KPM School The KPM Institute operates a K-12 school showing the practicality of schools based on the KPM Approach to Children. Started in 1995, and adding a grade each year, the school will graduate its first class in 2007. Currently there are forty students, with enrollment to be capped at 200. A ratio of at least one teacher to every four students is maintained throughout the school.
The School Is Nonsectarian, and Values Diversity
- The KPM School - Austin, opened in 1995, is the second KPM school, following the model of the first school started in India in 1987. The third KPM school will open in the UK in 2006, and a fourth KPM school in France is in the planning stages.
- All KPM schools are non-sectarian, draw students from all sectors of their local communities, and value diversity among the staff and student body.
The Children Love the School
- The KPM Institute and its school put the KPM Approach to Children into practice.
- The children know they come first with their teachers. In the openness that accompanies trust, teachers help the children pursue their interests, provide a rich learning environment, and serve as a resource for all aspects of their learning.
- Children learn at their own pace, while being exposed to the full curriculum.
- Parents and teachers are partners in drawing forth the child’s fullest development—personal, social, and academic.
Teachers Love the School
- Teachers develop relationships with children that last throughout their schooling.
- Teachers report that applying the KPM Approach to Children is both the most demanding and rewarding challenge of their teaching careers.
- All of the teachers’ skills, resources, creativity, and own interests find a use in service of the children’s education.
A Beautiful Site
- A beautiful wooded ten-acre campus in central Austin is a living classroom for the older students, and a protected but exciting setting for the younger ones.
- The Lower Primary (K-3rd) occupies its own building and playground. The Upper Primary (4th-6th grades), Junior High (7th–8th grades), and High School (9th–12th grades) have their own indoor and outdoor classrooms and learning spaces.
