| KPM Institute Mission
The mission of the KPM Institute is to contribute to positive world change by transforming education. The KPM Institute is a resource for education of all kinds—mainstream and alternative, public and private. Its goals are:
- to transform the community discussion of education
- to affect education policy in Austin, the US, and internationally
- to express clear, proven, demonstrable courses of action for improving education
At the Heart of the KPM Institute: the KPM Approach to Children
- The KPM Approach to Children provides educational principles that are the basis of the KPM Institute's mission.
- Application of the KPM Approach to Children establishes an educational environment in which students are valued unconditionally through the relationship with their teachers. In this trusting relationship, the children can express their interests and have them supported and amplified. Educated in this way, they develop the personal, intellectual, and social qualities that make for productive adult and community life.
- The KPM Approach to Children is modeled in the KPM Model School in India, where it originated, and its applicability to the US is demonstrated in the Institute’s KPM School in Austin, Texas.
The KPM Institute as an Organization
- The KPM Institute welcomes new volunteers and supporters, and offers a one-hour Open Doors Introduction twice monthly to present an overview of its mission and programs.
- A volunteer, nine-member board of directors steers the KPM Institute. A core staff of about 25 volunteers conducts its activities, supplemented by others for specific events and projects.
- Founded in 1993 to support the KPM Approach to Children and the KPM Model School in India, the Institute expanded its mission in 1995 to start its KPM School, Austin, and again in 2002 to transform the community discussion on education and be a resource for the education community.
- The KPM Institute’s major programs are its KPM School and Outreach Program. Both offer a wide range of opportunities for involvement.
The KPM Institute Facts and Figures
- 52% of the Institute's funds come from individual contributions, 32% comes from school tuition and fees, and about 14% comes from incidental rentals of its facilities. The Institute conducts an annual fundraising campaign for operating funds, and is embarking on a capital campaign to secure its property and renovate a key school building.
- Tuition paid by parents to the school covers slightly more than half of the cost of each child's education; the other half is subsidized by the KPM Institute. There is a limited amount of financial aid available to students.
- The purchase of the land that houses KPM Institute offices and the school is financed entirely by individual donors.
